Landscape Design & Garden Inspection
led by Shane Doherty, Jan Raabe & Margaret Lynch
at Dalmeny
Don’t forget to bring along something of interest from your garden for Show & Tell.
BYO morning tea, lunch and a chair
We are meeting on Saturday at the garden of
Margaret and Peter Lynch in Dalmeny. After
morning tea, fellow member and Landscape
Designer, Shane Doherty will discuss the
differences and commonalities of the gardens
we will be looking at.
Following a walk through Margaret’s garden,
we will drive to Jan’s garden at Ocean Parade
Dalmeny for lunch and a look at her garden.
As well as her own garden, Jan will show us the garden she created for her son and his
family, who live next door, and another garden which is under construction.
Shane, Jan and Margaret will be happy to
answer your questions as we walk around the
gardens.
Shane is a semi-retired Landscape Designer who moved from Sydney three years ago to live on the South Coast.
Her first forays into garden design were in Adelaide. Here she created her own gardens, helped others to plan theirs, and was encouraged to consider a career in Landscape Design.
After moving to Sydney she studied for an Associate Diploma in Applied Science (Landscape) at Ryde TAFE. Undertaking the re-design of a large water-front garden during her second year of study gave Shane a rapid introduction to project and client man-agement and the practicalities of translating landscape design from paper to ground. Referrals from this job led to steady work and helped build her business in landscape design, construction and maintenance.
Currently Shane consults and supplies planting plans for local private gardens. Visiting private and public spaces gives her the opportunity to explore a diverse range of gardens and to continue learning how to choose, use and maintain indigenous plants in south-eastern Australia.
Shane would like us to look at the gardens of Margaret and Jan from a design perspective, taking into consideration the similarities, i.e. they both purchased homes with existing gardens which were mostly planted with exotics. Both are knowledgeable plantswomen who have been able to create new gardens using native plants. We can discuss the different challenges they have met, taking into consideration aspect, prospect, natural and built landform.
